White craned his neck, watching Gram and Yok argue in the center of the garage and it was getting violent, Gram shoving Yok back a few steps, but where White had expected Yok to swing back, he just took it, face open and sad. There were a lot of things that White wanted to know about his life here, long-dead connections, but he couldn't understand at all the way everyone looked right now, heartbroken and peeled apart.
“Sean,” White said gently, pressing his fingers into the curve of Sean’s shoulder. “What did Dan do?”
Sean stared at him, mouth open, eyes wide. “He killed my dad,” he said, then, “I can’t believe you forgot that.”

Black rolled his eyes. Of course Yok had made friends with the fucking thing. “Don’t talk to him.”
“Why? He’s got your face.”
“That means we’re supposed to be close?”
“I’d be,” Yok said, which he could say because he hadn’t been surprised with an identical twin twenty-two years after having one. “White’s cool!” White and Black. Great. They had theme names. “And you didn’t tell us he was Russian!”
Black’s hands didn’t flinch as he reached for the oil — he’d long since trained himself out of any reaction to surprising news, when he was twelve and lost and any new piece of information was going to be devastating.

Black must have sensed something in his voice, because he appeared in the bathroom door a minute later, yawning. “What? What’s wrong?”
It was much easier to look at his brother the stranger than the stranger in the mirror. Black had a tattoo and earrings and a bored look on his face and he might be a stranger, but White had always expected that, that his brother would be someone entirely new to relearn again.
“Are you crying again,” Black asked suspiciously.

“Shut up. You just like it, okay? I can’t get you something you like?”
Oh. That was almost sweet. White didn’t even know Black knew that about him.
“I haven’t had curry in ages,” White said blankly. “I used to go to this place near my school campus, one of the owner’s was Thai. She’d—” she’d used to speak to him in Thai, even, though by then he was used to swallowing the language down. “It closed down.”
Black paused. “You never told me that before.”

Sean folded his hand around White’s hand, drawing it away from his face. “Let’s just—” he said, and then trailed off into nothingness.

White tried not to feel disappointed. In another world, maybe White could have all of this without the jagged scar of his burnt-out memories hanging over them. That world existed around him. He just didn’t belong in it.

He never had anything like Sean in the first place.

“You missed —” Black reached out, turning White's face towards him. White drank in the bits and pieces of his brother that he always knew would look just like him. “Hey. Tell me what’s wrong. Did Sean do something?”
“Who?”

Now Black didn’t want his baby brother to be hurt, but he wanted him safe. And White went home, which was all Black ever wanted, so why did everything feel so fucking wrong?

aka: a canon-divergent au in which White does actually go home to his father. This is bad in a lot of different ways for everyone involved.
