Discord is also rolling out an age inference model that analyzes metadata like the types of games a user plays, their activity on Discord, and behavioral signals like signs of working hours or the amount of time they spend on Discord. “If we have a high confidence that they are an adult, they will not have to go through the other age verification flows,” Badalich says. “A majority of people are not going to see a change in their experience.” She goes on to explain that the addition of age assurance will mainly impact adult content: “A majority of people on Discord are not necessarily looking at explicit or graphic content. When we say that, we’re really talking about things that are truly adult content [and] age inappropriate for a teen. So, the way that it will work is a majority of people are not going to see a change in their experience."

Our note on ableism and classism was rooted in the desire to point out that, for people in certain circumstances, some forms of AI can be life-changing. Adam Leeb, the chief executive of Astrohaus, the company that makes the writing tool Freewrite, another NaNoWriMo sponsor, said that he had issues with some of the language the organization had used in its statement but that the company wasn’t ready to end its support just yet. Some authors have said they have used A.I. for inspiration, or to explore the possibilities of form. The novelist Sheila Heti, known for her literary experiments, used a customizable chatbot to write a short story that was published in The New Yorker last year. “Historically, anytime that people or organizations have tried to resist the march of technology, they’ve failed,” Mr. Leeb said in an interview. “While we don’t have any generative A.I. in our products, we don’t necessarily look down on people who are using it,” he added. Eagle-eyed users on X noted that Freewrite’s logo had been removed from the NaNoWriMo website this week. Leeb said that was an error and that his team had not requested the change.

It was clear that the intimidation and harassment we witnessed were causing harm within our community of writers. The FAQs we crafted last week were written to curtail those behaviors. We wanted to send a clear signal that NaNoWriMo spaces would not be used to bully or delegitimize other writers. This was consistent with our May 2024 statement, which named a lack of civility in NaNoWriMo spaces as a longstanding concern. Taking a position of neutrality was not an abandonment of writers’ legitimate concerns about AI. It was an acknowledgment that NaNoWriMo can’t maintain a civil, inclusive community if we allow selective intolerance. We absolutely believe that AI must be discussed and that its ethical use must be advocated-for.
Excerpt from Washington Post article on NaNo AI controversy. Text: ProWritingAid’s founder, Chris Banks, confirmed to The Washington Post on Wednesday that the company has long supported NaNoWriMo. He said his organization was “committed to supporting human creativity, not undermining it.” “We fundamentally disagree with the sentiment that criticism of AI tools is inherently ableist or classist. We believe that writers’ concerns about the role of AI are valid and deserve thoughtful consideration,” Banks wrote in an email. NaNoWriMo did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Post.
Added text: Note: we have edited this post by adding this paragraph to reflect our acknowledgment that there are bad actors in the AI space who are doing harm to writers and who are acting unethically. We want to make clear that, though we find the categorical condemnation for AI to be problematic for the reasons stated below, we are troubled by situational abuse of AI, and that certain situational abuses clearly conflict with our values. We also want to make clear that AI is a large umbrella technology and that the size and complexity of that category (which includes both non-generative and generative AI, among other uses) contributes to our belief that it is simply too big to categorically endorse or not endorse. Why are you making so many changes without engaging the community? First and foremost, not all of our community engagement has been visible. We've had scores of conversations, email interactions, and volleyed messages with community members using other media. We've trawled forum threads at length and taken down suggestions. We've sent surveys and reviewed the data. We've received suggestions forwarded by the Board. Even though we have yet to hold anything like a town hall meeting, a tremendous amount of feedback has been received and taken into account.
