I am a farmer and the outright owner of a $400,000 John Deere combine, and this morning a sensor decided I am not allowed to drive it. The sensor was working perfectly. That was the problem. An emissions reading drifted, the machine did what the manual calls a derate and everyone out here calls limp mode, and now I have a full tank, a full engine, and 3 miles an hour. It is October. The forecast is rain Thursday. The corn does not care about the settlement. I did everything you are supposed to do. I bought it outright. I did not lease. I have the title, the manual, the torque specs, and 40 years of knowing which bolt is which. I can rebuild the engine on a tailgate. What I cannot do is tell the engine it is allowed to run. Because the thing that stopped it is not a part. It is a permission. The reset lives in software, the software lives with the dealer, and the dealer is 90 minutes away and booked through Friday.

I think that writing a genuinely good short story is possible with today’s technology, but maybe economically infeasible. Some combination of many passes, RL on creative writing tasks at the major labs, and using fine-tuned models locally would probably get you there. But the economic value of even a great short story is roughly $0, so will anyone bother?
I didn’t think any of the stories I generated were “good” in the sense of reading it being a net positive experience (sorry!). I was very pleasantly surprised to make the short list. I was surprised by how much of a problem Claude’s “house style” was, both in the sense that I didn’t make much headway in getting Claude to deviate from it, and that I found it intensely grating after a while. In fact, by the end of the roughly one month I spent on this project, the limiting factor was my willingness to read additional generations. I had time and Claude usage to spare, but zero willingness to read more generated stories.

Over the last decade, building human-level artificial general intelligence has moved from far-fetched speculation to being a concrete next-decade target for many of the largest AI organisations. Achieving this goal would have profound and far-reaching impacts on human society, which raises many complex questions for the decade ahead. This report investigates how AI itself might continue to develop in a post-AGI world along the continuum of machine intelligence. The endpoint of this continuum, Universal AI, is theoretically well understood, which provides some formal grounding for the main focus of this report: the transition from human-level AGI to artificial general superintelligence, which, intuitively, can be understood as a system that is more intelligent and cognitively capable than large organisations of humans. After characterizing ASI, the report discusses four potential pathways from AGI to ASI: scaling AGI, AI paradigm shifts, recursive improvement, and ASI emerging from large-scale multi- agent collectives. The report then discusses possible frictions and bottlenecks along these pathways. Determining whether the impact of these frictions will be negligible or substantial raises a number of concrete open research questions. Due to large uncertainties for predicting ASI progress, it cannot be ruled out that AI progress might continue to accelerate over the next years. This could imply that the image of a single transformative step change, caused by the introduction of human-level AGI into our society, could be inaccurate. More apt might be the prospect of a series of transformative societal changes caused by AI-enabled progress and breakthroughs across many areas of science and technology. Preparing for this prospect requires a massively interdisciplinary endeavour of global scope and interest.
Basic argument: In a certain sense, AI is already “smart” enough for this (eg it can answer quantum physics problems, which require higher IQ than most knowledge work). Its remaining limitations are that it’s confused, unagentic, lacks situational awareness, and tends to hallucinate. For the most part, they cannot even understand what those theorems mean. And yet, somehow, those humans don’t feel that they lack “human relevance”. For that matter, they cannot do arithmetic as quickly as a computer, run as fast as an automobile, fly through the air like a plane, break rocks like a jackhammer, or do many other things as efficiently as the devices that a tiny number of humans have invented and a slightly larger number of humans know how to build. And yet they still muddle along, mostly content with their lives. Human relevance is not tied to the most ambitious thing that the best human can do. There isn’t even such a thing as human relevance. Humans don’t need to be relevant to anyone but themselves and to their family and neighbors. I’m retired. I sit around and play video games, read books, go to movies, and do things my wife tells me to do. I have been moderately useful in my career to those who have employed me, I have helped raise a son who is so far successfully launched in life, and I feel fine with that, despite not having invented anything, not written any novels, nor set any athletic records.

Codex has officially paid for itself on the $100 plan.. A week ago I asked it to go make me $5. In one day, it found several legitimate open-source paid tasks, and picked the ones that looked real, it wrote the all the code, opened PRs, handled maintainer feedback, kept my payment details private, and helped route the payouts back to me. Most of the time after that was just waiting on maintainers to review, merge, and pay. So far, three of those jobs have paid out: $16.88, $6.80, and now $75. Total: $98.68. That’s about a $986.80/month run-rate based on the three-day window, or about $1,480/month if you count the active work as roughly two days. One of the funniest parts - in one email thread, I asked why they don’t use Codex for this kind of work, and they basically said it’s “not really good enough yet” without realizing Codex had already done the work they were paying me for. This feels like a very early glimpse of where work is going. Also a ton of people, ranging from OpenAI employees, really big influencers, and a lot of people who follow me, have asked me what my prompt is and I feel disappointed in telling you all. It's literally a poorly worded two-sentence prompt that basically just says, "Make me $5 and do what you are good at!"
So what is the point of struggling with a difficult mathematics problem? One answer is that it can be very satisfying to solve a problem even if the answer is already known, but I don’t think that is a sufficient reason to spend several years of your life on this peculiar activity. A better answer is that by solving hard problems you get an insight into the problem-solving process itself, at least in your area of expertise, in a way that you simply don’t if all you do is read other people’s solutions. One consequence of this is that people who have themselves solved difficult problems are likely to be significantly better at using solving problems with the help of AI, just as very good coders are better at vibe coding than not such good coders, or people who have a solid grasp of how to do basic arithmetic are likely to be more skilled at using calculators (and especially at noticing when an answer feels off). Mathematics is a highly transferable skill, and that applies to research-level mathematics as well. By doing research in mathematics, you may not get the same rewards as your equivalents a generation ago, but there is a good chance that you will be equipping yourself very well for the world we are about to experience.

More precisely, I gave some questions asked by Melvyn Nathanson to ChatGPT 5.5 Pro, to which I have been given access, and it answered them. 🧵 I write about this in more detail in a blog post with a guest contribution from Isaac Rajagopal, a student at MIT on whose work ChatGPT built, who gives his assessment of the level of mathematical ability displayed by the model. But the tl;dr version is that the model proved a result that in my assessment would have made a perfectly reasonable chapter in a PhD thesis. It did this in a total of a couple of hours, with a few prompts from me that contained no mathematical input whatsoever.
