βThe world is not going to be saved by big SUVs that are electric." Cars in US are getting bigger (and more expensive!) Same was happening in Europe until 2024, when cars were 4% wider than in 2016. Now the trend is reversing, as small E-vehicles hit the roads www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Oh please bring them to the USA sooner than later. I'm encouraged by the timeline of the Chevy Bolt. CW said the project would be cancelled when the tax subsidies were revoked. GM plowed on. CW said it would be a one year run. GM plans to move production to a bigger facility.

βThe world is not going to be saved by big SUVs that are electric." Or any other electric vehicle. Or, any vehicle however driven.

I never understand a blond woman alone in a big SUV just to go to the grocery store. Does she have 8 kids at home that she needs that size car for all their food? Look around and you will see them everywhere!

People will happily buy smaller cheaper cars if offered them. But it looks like US auto makes like Ford and GM dont want that, they much prefer the fatter profit margins on their SUVs

It's actually an indictment of a people who believe they are entitled to more space, more power, dominance. Its part of the sickness.

Well yeah because in the US theyre treating it like an arms race against everyone else on the road where they need to "win" any crashes by having the biggest war rig

People in the US see red when they see an ebike, there is no way they are buying into this. Every breeder thinks they need a diesel bus to get their clan around.

We have to make our cars big and heavy so we can put 100s of airbags in them to protect us from the inevitable crashes we'll have since everybody is splattergramming on their phones while they drive. We gave up on "hang up and drive" & just surrendered to distracted driving.

Electric Cars will save Car Companies not the World - regardless of size - however smaller is better

Smaller vehicles are fine in and around towns/cities - but I'd be nervous to be in a little car on the highway surrounded by semis and pickup trucks

The US is not Europe. Until we build up public transport and walkable cities, US families will continue to need larger cars to haul their family around everywhere. Not that plenty of folks aren't buying much larger than they need (looking at you Texas trucks), but even so, it's a systemic problem.

We can have big SUV EVs. Where is the rule? Just slap a bigger battery pack on it!

Must be fun to buy new cars all the time. Never had but one new car, and it was a lemon way back in 1980 when there was nothing I could do about it. Low income people have to drive what they got.

In other words, Europe is getting ahead of low-cost Chinese EVs, while the US is...well...to tell you the truth, I'm not sure, but it's definitely nothing that has lick of good sense.

The 3 key problems with big vehicles: 1. Given their weight & size, they are significantly harder on the environment than smaller cars 2. They don't pay their way when it comes to public resources like parking & roads 3. They are more lethal for children & cyclists

I taught a class at a Michigan location and in the class were a husband and wife engineer team who developed some big SUV hybrid for GM. I asked them why they did a huge SUV instead of a passenger car - they said they chose the SUV because they could double its mileage. Which made a big difference.

It seems that, in the US, "It's everyman/woman for him/herself." Very large SUVs and Pickup Trucks keep those inside safe while endangering others. Many short people can barely see over the steering wheels and the front ends can almost hide an entire pedestrian.

The original mini, and the fiat 500,two little cars that were perfect for shopping and getting around in traffic. Then everything got bigger, and bigger. We need cheap, small, basic shopping cars again. No gps, satnav,ac,screens, just a basic motor with cvt, windup windows etc. Like the 2cv citreon.

In the USA, I think regulatory arbitrage (to maximize profit) is largely responsible for the ever-increasing cars sizes to the current clownishly-oversized cars. In Europe, I think fear of Chinese cars is driving the size down. Small cars also make more sense in Europe and in general.
