Good/Evil: The Anthropology of Ethics Beyond Disenchantment
In this paper, we attend to the persistent question of what gets to count as “the real” within anthropology. Although there has been a greater acceptance within the human sciences of alternative “ways of knowing” beyond the long-standing Weberian ethics of disenchantment, there seems to remain an occluded gulf between how worlds and realities are experienced and discussed. The distinction between home and field continues to remain a place of tension and confusion within the discipline, and these categories seem to span beyond the spatial and into the ontological. We argue that this confusion stems from an anthropology of ethics which has had trouble explaining the moral realities of good and evil after disenchantment. More specifically, this confusion is a problem of method—we ask: how might we take the lessons from a post-disenchanted anthropology and reconstitute an anthropology of ethics with moral realism at its fulcrum?
