The same thing every time: swimming through the open ocean, alone. A winter sea. “Every time I look at it, something else is wrong. Sometimes the gray is too dark, the brush strokes too wide.” “Maybe it’s time for a reference trip? Rememberin’ a figment of your imagination can only do so much.” “You think it’s safe enough to go out?” “Right now’s the safest you’ll get, sugarcube. B‘sides early mornings. Flounder boats are out ‘till next week and only idiots would surf or swim in water this cold.” Lina gazed out the window, weighing her options. “Maybe tomorrow. It’s supposed to warm up overnight, just a bit.” Gran smiled, “Alright. After we finish this tea, why don’t you help me make supper? You can make the cornbread, you always loved using the mixer.”
