Three cueing, also known as the searchlight model or MSV (which stands for meaning, syntax, and visual information), is a controversial method of teaching young children how to read. It involves guessing the meaning of unfamiliar words based on context clues, as opposed to phonics, the more traditional method of sounding out words. The method originated in the 1960s out of the work of Ken Goodman and Marie Clay, and soon saw widespread adoption in classrooms. Day 25: Story Tell me a story, I want to hear Of a time when living wasnā€™t so drear. Oh dear! Letā€™s see, Going back through historyā€¦ The rich have always had it goodā€¦ Upon the backs of others they stood. The poor and those who didnā€™t fit By race or gender, they were bent To make the stairs the wealthy climbed All through history, time after time. It matters not what era you look in, The taleā€™s the same, just a diff'rent spin Even in periods where it was better, Where wealth was spread a little thinner, Even then, as you can see, There was a lot of disparity Not as much in rich vs poor, But human rights still had more To go to make us equal To see all earthlings as one people Who deserve, one and all, Unbiased rights to be the law.
Day 23: Singing The music of the world has hit a discordant note.ā€Ø The angels sing out of harmony. The heavenly conductor throws down his baton and threatens to go to hell, For, he says, the demons canā€™t be any worse. In hell, the horned conductor has the opposite problem. His demons are pitch perfect, Their music lifts everyone spirits, Bringing them all a little closer to heaven.
Day 20: Circus Heard the American people have spoken. Thought send in the clowns. Heard weā€™ve given Washington a moral imperative. Thought itā€™s a three-ring circus. Heard heā€™s picked his cabinet. Thought here comes the clown car. Heard heā€™s replacing everyone, clearing out the swamp. Thought how many clowns fit into that car anyway? Hereā€™s your popcorn, Keep your eyes on the center ring.
Day 18: Kite I catch the hint of a string first, As I notice the students standing on the green. Their hands hold something, And though I canā€™t see it From where I sit in my car At the circle where other parents Ignore the No Parking sign Just as Iā€™m doing, I look upwards. There is a kite-flying pose that every child and former child knows Hand outstretched, Feeling the tension in the string Eyes upward, Watching the dance of the kite on the breeze. In my car, Iā€™m transported back To soft spring days, Newspapers spread on the floor. A cross made of two sticks, bound by twine Folding the comics over the wood, Then taping a single line down and one across. Finally, tying a soft cloth tail is tied to the end. Dad drove us out to a field. The giggles as I ran, Short arms outstretched As high as I could reach, Trying to lift the kite into the skyā€¦ Dreaming of it lifting me, Imagining flying high over the fields, Looking down at the people living their lives. The wind tugged the paper loose from tiny hands And I flopped back onto the grass and watched it soar.
Day 17: Organize Workers of the world, unite! Do not give in without a fight. Whether desk or factory laborer Artist, bar keep, tinker, tailor If you strive instead of dally, Join us, add to the tally. Those with wealth might think us peasants, They need to learn weā€™re more like fire ants. Alone itā€™s true, we each are tiny, But joining together we are mighty. And so we must ignore their lies. Todayā€™s the day to organize.

Friday Is the start of my weekend. My week now is Monday through Thursday. Four days of driving back and forth, Watching the miles pile up on the ā€œnewā€ car. Three years old, but itā€™s not the Volvo With all the bells and whistles. Itā€™s the accidental car, the one we thought was a replacement, Only to find itā€™s so basic that thereā€™s not dual heating; a requirement when only one partner is cold-blooded. But today is Friday No hours spent in the car No miles piled on It is the rest day I imagine Sunday was supposed to be But never was. Growing up, rushing to get ready for church, Making sure you had everything: Bible, check Lesson book, check Hair brushed, noā€¦run do it now. Teeth brushed? Check Straighten your dress, itā€™s twisted. There, now you look presentable. It felt like school before Monday marked the official school Sunday school, literally. Not a day of rest. But Fridays are Lazy Restful Nap-able Recharging Snuggle up with a good book and throw something easy in the oven for dinner-type of days. The promise at the end of the week.
I am very young, Watching, through the screen door For the postman to bring the mail. Will there be anything for me? I donā€™t know, but I hope. The idea of something arriving from somewhere Iā€™m not fascinates me. It doesnā€™t matter what it is, anything mail is something outside of me And the world outside of me seems vast and endless. I have yet to discover how vast and endless it is inside of me. At night I dream of telephones, Rooms and rooms of phones. Only one works, but I canā€™t find the one with a connection.
