letterboxd review for almost famous. 5/5, loved. my god where do i begin with this film? in the opening, anita is the reason that williams gets into rock music in the first place. she left him her records. for such a minor character, anita's impact is huge on shaping william's life. the scene where russel is high on drugs being told to jump while william begs him to come down. the raw, honest portrayal of dehumanization of the celebrity life and how easily even the exploited can repeat the cycle. the complexity of which russel is both a horrible man and a tragic figure, where even william's mother tells him it's not too late to become a good person... which is followed up with him selling penny & her friends to another band. it's challenging to watch, and i cannot stress enough: russel as a character is layered, complex, and nuanced. the set pieces on this are exquisite. the band's van is portrayed as both uncomfortable and yet an obvious home to them. the stages never feel the same - it's always a different feeling of a venue. all of it lends itself to a wonderful 1970s rock scene vibe, and there's an obvious love and care put into them. the costumes are incredible, with penny lane's being the obvious stand out. i was impressed by how incredibly beautiful this film manages to be. there is so much emotion in this film, and the way women shape and inform william's coming of age is noticeable. while i wouldn't call this a feminist film by any stretch of the means, i'm always fascinated by the way women in a movie shape it. penny lane is at the emotional center of this film as william's romantic interest, and she drives the film's themes. "famous people are more interesting" being said right after russel was told to jump to his to death is evocative, and raw. also shout out to the guy who came out as gay on the plane when he thought he might die in 1973 only to have to immediately live as an openly gay man in 1973. shit's rough, buddy. and of course... the ending …

a review on letterboxd for eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. five stars. loved film. holy shit. first of all, the jokes in it were actually so funny. which is great because outside those jokes, this is 2 hours of the most depressing film i've ever watched. like. what if you erased someone from your memory but their impact so wholly changed you at your base core that you are left forever changed? what if you couldn't let go while they were erasing your memory, and you dragged that someone to your childhood in hopes of clinging onto her. what if at the last second, you realized you did love them? what if the two of you were so entwined that you can't HELP but fall back in love? also i hope patrick dies.
a review on letterboxd for gentleman prefer blondes. 3 & half stars. knocking off one and half a star because if this movie was made today, loreli and dorothy so would've ended up together. their chemistry was off the charts. like. ladies...... got annoyed at the random sexist assumption that loreli was a scheming criminal. gus is kind of a shuck. all that being said: this movie was shockingly horny. like. really fuckin horny. the random scene of the men stripped down to their boxers showing off their form had my jaw dropped. i understand why everyone was going crazy for marilyn monroe, because while this movie isn't super racy by today's standards, you could TELL the girlies in 1953 were GAGGED. i enjoyed this film overall because the musical moments had that quintessential 1950s musical charm (you know the sound) and the set pieces were GORGEOUS. also every one of loreli's costumes were so gorgeous. dorothy's hair? always perfect. definitely give it a watch if you love a good silly musical. dorothy and lorlei's gags are absolutely worth it.
