You've seen them all over the place. When the leaves start falling off the trees and the wind turns cold, they appear. Wherever there's an abandoned Sears or Kmart, you'll probably find one lurking within. They also became a big business venture thanks to a recession. We're talking about pop-up Halloween stores, of course. Every Halloween, they rise from the commercial real estate graveyard. In 2009, Spirit Halloween took over 83 defunct Circuit City locations when that chain closed down for good. Vacant big-box retail spaces are simply harder to rent out than smaller ones. The recession basically forced commercial real estate owners to stop being so picky. By re-animating mummified retail spaces, Halloween stores are doing the economy a bit of a service, if you can believe that.
