So A Hunger With No Name really had me fooled for the first five seconds. I saw the title and braced myself for another “chosen one must tame the mystical whatever” situation… and then bam you hit me with high-desert star-reading, polluted waterways, and political clockwork emissaries who feel like someone hired steampunk HR interns to negotiate cultural assimilation. I was nodding so much my neck filed a complaint. And Thurava? Ma’am. The way she’s out here having an existential crisis because the Glass City is basically that one neighbor who keeps building extensions without telling the HOA relatable. And painful. And honestly too close to reality. I also read your author bio, and now I feel personally betrayed that a person who once checked wardrobes for magical portals grew up to write a book that actually feels like a portal. Meanwhile, I’m still waiting for my Narnia moment. If Aslan could get back to me, that’d be great. Anyway, let me reassure you: I am not a marketer, promoter, guru, oracle, algorithm whisperer, or any of the other strange species that usually crowd your inbox. If I were one of them I’d at least be wearing a cape or asking for a deposit. I’m just Ava I read books too aggressively and hang out in a private community of 1000+ readers [blah blah] And here’s the painful truth I’m sure you already know Books like yours smart, atmospheric, original can accidentally end up playing hide-and-seek with Amazon’s algorithm forever. One wrong metadata sneeze and boom your book disappears into the void like someone walked through the wrong mirror dimension. That’s where I come in [blah blah]Worst case you get a handful of thoughtful Amazon/Goodreads reviews. Best case your book stops being the desert’s best-kept secret and finally gets the visibility it deserves. So what do you think Want me to give Thurava and her not-quite herds a little signal boost Or should I just go back to staring at the nearest glass building like it personally offended me

The Impulsive One I find the very last water cache as the sun touches the horizon, painting the Glass City far to the north red and gold. The last person through the waystation didn’t set the marking stones properly, making it harder to find in the fading light with the day’s work weighing down my shoulders. Crouching, I keep my back to the Glass City only in part so its glow won’t spoil my vision. Inside the dugout, three clay vessels roughly the size of a child’s head are full of life-giving water. The fourth’s been smashed, the braided reed stopper the only thing salvageable. I pluck it from the jagged shards and pull another vessel from my pack, already stoppered and tied loosely with twine. I nestle it with the others, insulate each one with dirt, then drape sticks and twigs over the hole, before topping it over with more sandy dirt. The marking stones are the last step. Five round stones, palm-sized, dark and smooth from handling except for the constellations carved into each one to represent the cache’s location relative to the stars.

Lani Rene Longshore gave it 5.0 out of 5 stars The Cost of Freedom: a review of A Hunger With No Name Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2025 I had a chance to read A Hunger With No Name while on vacation. Teffeau's serious, though-provoking short novel gave my holiday deeper meaning as her protagonist made choices and lived with the consequences, as well as the consequences of choices made for her. I found the theme of hope in the midst of despair ultimately uplifting and encouraging. As with all great science fiction, Teffeau has highlighted issues that confront us in the real world and presented a possible outcome, while also showing the range of choices available to us here and now.
