Video of various happy Squash Bees on my pumpkin flowers. They're solitary bees that get up bright and early just to pollinate squash flowers. The calmest bees were filmed in the morning, when flowers were fully open, and the more active bees were filmed in the warmer afternoon, as the flowers were closing. The last bee (big black one) was not a squash bee, but is a giant carpenter bee. All filmed July 8, 2026.

“Damien, we—I need your help—" “Yes, it’s a good thing you came when you did.” He tilted his head curiously, as if appraising me somehow. “Last thing I told you before leaving was to take care of yourself. But you’re exhausted. When did you last let yourself get a good night’s sleep? And you’ve lost an unhealthy amount of weight. And you’re… nearly anemic.” He paused, considering. “How many meals have you skipped? Have you seriously eaten nothing but pastries for the past week? I should have fixed their restaurants while I was there…” he muttered. I blinked again. Definitely not how I’d imagined this conversation going. “Damien,” I whispered, “why do you care?” Damien abruptly stopped and turned away, frowning. As if unwilling to acknowledge something he knew to be true. In his pale blue eyes, I swear I saw a flicker of… fear. What had I done to make Damien—an ancient, powerful man—afraid of me? “Damien, just invite them in already!” a sweet, cheerful voice called from within. “They’re getting soaked. You can scold them more once they’re inside.” Damien sighed. “I don’t know why I let her stay,” he grumbled. He turned back to me, his glacial eyes meeting mine. “Won’t you come inside, Alex?” he asked, with a small, tight smile, and moved to the side of the door.
