They actually went really hard on the writing for Portal. The lore for GLaDOS is pretty wild. She is meant to be representative of a bound woman and her physical design reflects that. Not sure if it's verified but GLaDOS is hinted at being the trapped consciousness of Cave Johnson's assistant.
