Despite my aching thumb I had a great time chipping away at it. It's possible I'll even go back to it someday? I'm sure FFVIIR does all of the moment-to-moment combat significantly better- I mean that's what I've been counting on this whole time- but the weird slot mechanic is a genuine innovation that would be neat to see in another project that's formatted similarly. Against all odds the ending actually sort of stuck the landing for me? I think all of the stuff with Aerith is unnecessary, Angeal and Genesis are sort of filling space to give the game more boss fights and enemy variations, there's just a hunk of wasted space in this thing. But I appreciate Zack as a character now, and probably not for the reasons I'm supposed to be appreciating him right now? I appreciate that Zack was a maniac to the bitter end. It's absolutely no wonder Cloud ends up so fucked up, Zack more or less directly tells him to live his life as a proxy of Zack. I also appreciated how the final battle lays to rest the burning questions I had in my head by the end of "how the hell are they going to kill this guy off in a satisfying way" and "well obviously my Zack loadout could body all of Shinra's forces so what gives" by making his last stand playable. And incorporating the stupid slot mechanics to add flashbacks to everyone he met along the way was really smart!! I liked that a lot. ADDENDUM: Fuck. Doing that for the post-credits sting was really good. They got me. I liked it. Kicks my feet in the dirt a little.
