These charged particles react with atmospheric gases, producing excited and ionized gases — the color of light emitted depends on the type of gas involved. Excited atomic oxygen at high altitudes (above 150 miles or 241.4 km): Appears red, visible only under intense solar activity due to low oxygen concentration at high altitudes. Excited atomic oxygen at lower altitudes (up to 150 miles or 241.4 km): Emits green light instead of red, due to higher oxygen concentration. Ionized molecular nitrogen (above 60 miles or 96.6 km; up to 60 miles or 96.6 km): Reaction involves molecular nitrogen because atomic oxygen is uncommon at low altitudes. Blue and purple hues are associated with intense solar activity.
