HUGHES COUNTY COURTHOUSE (Capitol Ave. at Pierre St.) An example of the utilization of native materials, this modern-styled, four-story building is made of boulders from the hillsides near Pierre. It is trimmed with Hot Springs sandstone, the entrance carved by Joseph Auer, schoolmate of Adolph Hitler, German chancellor. The original stone slab, “1833 Hughes County Courthouse,” has been built into the wall of the first floor.
