Oh, sure, you can write lots of articles about ways in which the software/games industries have ruined the social contract with how they conduct themselves with end users, but have you forgotten how the Palmpilot software ecosystem was endless people with hands out and holding a gun to their heads?

I remember when shareware was a big thing!
No, this was before you paid anything. Nowadays you get the annoying loss of functionality *after* you pay.
