Tinanvalanta- a Finnish New Year tradition of melting a small tin horseshoe over the stove and dropping the melted metal into snow or cold water. After holding the glob of melted metal against light, the shadow it casts is a harbinger for what’s to come. Three stages of the melting process, a big metal spoon with an unmelted horseshoe, another spoon with a partially melted horseshoe, and a third spoon with a completely melted horseshoe. All spoons are over a hotplate.
