After Smith's death, Strang made claim as the rightful successor to the Mormon throne with a value proposition that he possessed a letter supposedly written and mailed to Strang by Smith proclaiming Strang the next in line. This gambit somehow didn't work. (3/n)

Long story short, Strang and his followers were exiled from the church and washed up in Beaver Isl. in 1848, then home to a contingent of recently-immigrated Irish loggers and indigenous communities. Strang and his followers (Strangites) quickly set up shop, flourishing in their new environs. (4/n)
