Stargirl @thea.codes · Dec 20 Not to horsebeat, but it's also really gross that Prusa takes time to pat himself on the back about their Slic3r-derived PrusaSlicer and Marlin-derived firmware being open source (when they have to be) while simultaneously insulting those projects by saying they could rewrite them.

I am going to make an alternative case. What we're watching is a person with long history in open source whose work arguably kick-started the Chinese 3D print industry, doing his best to retain connection to his principles while also responding to the commercial realities of the 3D printwr business.
Also, if they rewrote the rest in a non-clean-room way, wouldn't that still count as a derivative and still be GPL...
Even if PrusaSlicer is so ship-of-theseus that none of slic3r's original code remains, it's still a shitty thing to minimize and downplay the work of volunteers that gave you a massive head start. Especially while trying to push a license that stops others from benefiting the way you did!
They'd also need to go through and rewrite all community contributions too, not just original code, since afaik they lack a CLA that lets then relicense other contributions. Overall, what a shitty look. I've seen people celebrating this blog as them being more open, when it's everything but :/
And Slic3r is AGPL not GPL, even that they can't write it correctly...
