There’s also another important factor at work. While writing at my publication Notes on the Crises this year, I have argued that stock markets are “conventional wisdom processors.” What this means is that traders do not simply buy and sell on new information but on how they believe this new information fits into their compatriots’ views of the world. This may not seem like a major distinction, but it is. A Trump win last November was anticipated to be “good” for stocks by their conventional wisdom, and indeed, the stock market went up after his election. These “conventional wisdoms” can be surprisingly sturdy in the face of events that seem explosive to us outsiders.

J.P. Morgan slashes earnings estimates J.P. Morgan analyst Ryan Brinkman cut his first-quarter earnings estimate, lowering it from $0.40 per share to $0.36 per share. Brinkman also lowered his full-year projection to $2.30 per share. The Wall Street consensus is $2.70. Brinkman cited Tesla's announcement just days ago that it had delivered just 336,681 units in Q1, making it the worst quarter for deliveries since 2022. He believes this confirms the narrative that Musk's political involvement had significantly damaged Tesla's brand, saying, "The sales report causes us to think that -- if anything -- we may have underestimated the degree of consumer reaction."

In past standoffs, Democrats have felt confident that government shutdown politics played to their advantage, as the media often put scrutiny on Republicans during spending lapses — or Democrats were able to blame conservative agitators for shutdowns. Now there’s growing fear among Democrats that Trump could feel politically emboldened to let a shutdown drag on for many weeks, and that, in turn, could give Musk more leverage to push federal workers to retire, as many might feel financial pressure to look for work in the private sector if they have to endure weeks without a paycheck.
