'Come Away In' Exhibition: 19th-22nd May 2026 We’re pleased to host an exhibition celebrating the collaborative work between the Poverty Truth Community and the Binks Hub. The exhibition will share a range of work from the project, including the new Poverty Truth Community archive, which brings together community stories and objects. There will also be interactive soundscapes, collage pieces, and a digital quilt - all created by and for the community. It will be a chance to spend time with the stories, images, and creative work that have come from the Community, and to learn more about the people, relationships, and values at the heart of it. And, hopefully, enjoy a cup of tea too. We’d love you to ‘come away in’, spend time in the space, and connect with the work. Drop in any time during the week at the Byres Community Hub, running from 12pm on Tuesday 19th May – 12pm on Friday 22nd May Members of the community will be available to talk to on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11am - 2pm each day. Poverty and inequality in Scotland - 1 million Scots are living in poverty, including 250,000 children - 7 in 10 children in poverty live in working households - 1 million Scots are food insecure - Mortality rates are twice as high in the most deprived areas of Scotland compared with the least deprived - Racism and anti immigrant sentiment is on the rise - Black and minority ethnic people are 60% more likely to live in the most deprived areas than white Scottish/British counterparts - Infants living in deprived areas are more likely to display development concerns - The Scottish Government has missed its child poverty targets - Educational Inequality shows no signs of narrowing - 1 in 10 school leavers living in the most deprived areas of Scotland remain unemployed nine months after school year, compared to 2.6% of young people in the least deprived areas

Celebrating Equally Safe Online Young People vs. Gender-Based Violence Room G.07 Informatics Forum, University of Edinburgh 24th November 2025, 4 - 6pm Join us to celebrate the work of the Equally Safe Online research project and launch the Young People vs Gender Based Violence report. The project has involved survivors. practitioners and academics in efforts to tackle online gender-based violence (GBV). We believe this project is the first to bring together computer and social scientists to work alongside GBV experts, including young people, to improve direction and mitigation of online misogyny and abuse. Opening remarks will be provided through a virtual address delivered by the Minister for Children, Young People and The Promise and Co-chair of the First Minister’s Taskforce on Online Harm, Ms Don-Innes. Young experts will launch the young people’s graphically designed report outlining the participatory project and the results, including their impact on AI development and their vision for the future. COSLA will recognize and welcome the commitment and work of young people to tackle online Gender-Based Violence. Computer scientists will then demonstrate methods to automatically detect harmful GBV content and potential AI-generated interventions and strategies to respond (counterspeech). This will be followed by a reflection from Professor Verena Rieser, Senior Staff Research Scientist at Google Deepmind who was the original visionary for the project. The event will be followed by a canape reception. All are welcome to attend. Spaces are limited so pleas register in advance.

The Poetry of Art and Impractical Repairs What can we do when the breakage of a precious object requires and emotional more than a physical repair? Join Jennifer Williams, Josephine Balfour-Oatts and Jimmy Turner for a day-long Utopia Lab exploring the potential of the use of poetry, creative writing and sculpture to effect reapirs of broken and damaged objects, attending to feelings and sentiment as much as to practical fixes. Reframing Criminal Justice Professional Development Seminar A half-day event on criminal justice, hosted at EFI by The Binks Hub and REALITIES. Join us for an inspiring seminar on reframing criminal justice. The Binks Hub and REALITIES are excited to welcome attendees to a half-day event exploring and championing change within the Scottish criminal justice system. Linking to our Easter Ross and North Lanarkshire Hubs, as well as to our Release Reimagined workstream, REALITIES has explored, worked with, and championed change within the Scottish criminal justice system. REALITIES (Researching Evidence-based Alternatives in Living, Imaginative, Traumatised, Integrated, Embodied Systems) in Health Disparities is a transdisciplinary UKRI funded project which explores how we might re-imagine the health and social care systems so that they might better respond to the needs of the communities who use them. Whether it is through the creation of theatre pieces, the advocating for accreditation workshops, or the creation of safe spaces to create art and build community, the findings from the project have far-reaching and exciting outputs that will be shared in the seminar. In particular, we will invite attendees to discuss and brainstorm about what this may suggest about the future of criminal justice policy, research and/or practice. Open to researchers, practitioners, and community members, everyone is welcome to connect and learn.

Creative research methods reading group Our popular online reading group for creative research methods is back for a new semester! Each session we will focus on creative and artistically engaged methods for research. The emphasis will be on practice and the application of methods. We may invite participants to experiment between reading group meetings, but this is not required. You do not have to be an academic or a student to join this reading group, but you should have an interest in creative methods. Open to all.

Working creatively with children and young people from minority ethnic backgrounds This workshop will introduce participants to recent research with children and young people from minority ethnic backgrounds. We will explore what we have learned about how to work creatively and collaboratively with these children and young people. The workshop will begin with three short presentations relating to recent research from Robina Rubin, Dr Kristina Konstantoni and Dr Kamal Dokurugu Ibrahim.

The Binks Hub and REALITIES are excited to welcome attendees to a half-day event exploring alternative approaches to health and wellbeing. Focusing on green prescribing and planetary health, the first half of the seminar will open the floor to project teams to share their real-world insights into what’s working, where the gaps are, and how we can collectively move forward through community research and engagement. In the second half, we will hear from invited organisations who are paving the way in integrating green prescribing in their communities; offering their valuable perspectives on how planetary health and local initiatives are linked.
