This month is deeply personal for me as a late discovered AFAB Autistic. For most of my life I was in therapy to receive treatment for chronic depression + anxiety, but struggled to identify and articulate my feelings on why I felt the way I did. Without the proper tools or language to describe my experience, I dove deeper into feelings of isolation, shame, and self-loathing. Since learning about my Autism, I've begun to work through past traumas from a new lens of self acceptance and understanding.

Autism Acceptance Month is a way to celebrate the various experiences of being autistic by spreading autistic joy and validation. How does autism impact your streaming and content creation? It is a bit more difficult for me to meet the same standards of content creation in comparison to allistic creators. For example, I might not as consistent with my content, and my communication skills may make it difficult to engage with my audience at times.

As a late diagnosed autistic person Autism Acceptance month holds a special place in my heart as it took a long time to truly accept myself. I didn’t have a good support system growing up. Finding folks in the autistic community that took time to educate, uplift and support me has been life giving. It is also a great time to celebrate and share education about the wide variety of autistic experiences.

To me Autism Acceptance Month is a way for us to educate {not only Non-Autistic people} but also younger autistic folk that may not have the words to describe themselves. It gives us the spotlight {albeit momentarily} to get the info across that we aren’t some weird people that are trying to be difficult. We’re our own humans whose brains just work differently & that’s okay! We can still have community & should be allowed to take up space in ways that are accessible for our specific Neurodivergences!

This month shows me I’m not alone, and there are others as young as i am with the same issues. It gives me a community to ask questions, and get help with my own problems. How does limb loss impact your streaming and content creation? It affects streaming as sometimes my phantom pain acts up, and my body visibly jerks/twitches because of it. I have to change positions I’m sitting in a lot, and can’t stream on the days my nerve pain is super bad because of how much it affects my body.

Being autistic while streaming can be a struggle because i don’t understand certain jokes, and i can’t tell if someone is being mean to me. I can’t play certain games and HAVE to play games a certain way, which causes backseating. But autism acceptance means to me that I’m not alone, and that there are others like me and that doesn’t mean someone won’t enjoy my content.

Finding out I was Autistic as an adult completely reframed many things that happened as I was growing up, and has allowed me personally to better accept myself. All Autistic people deserve the same kind of acceptance both from others and themselves, and having a month dedicated to being Autistic provides additional framework for that.

To me, this month is about learning to accept all autistic folks across the spectrum of how they present in the world, no matter their level of needs of support. Highlighting acceptance > awareness has always been an important change that meant a shift in moving away from forced conversion of autistic folks.

This month to me is showing people that autism is a spectrum. And to show its diversity, contrary to the cookie cutter ways it's depicted in media, which is sometimes a person's only experience with autism. How does autism impact your streaming and content creation? Autism impacts every facet of streaming. It's extremely social and at my core I don't understand being social. It’s more tiring for me than for most and I frequently struggle to advertise myself or misunderstand the ways I'm interacted with.
