Artificial intelligence is, first of all, a machine for shifting income and power from labor to capital. When capitalist investors pay billions of dollars to make computers “know things,” then their purpose is to cheapen the knowledge that people have, save on wages, and turn the savings into profit.

The right wing is especially incoherent on this, as they are very behavior in their claims about rewards and punishments for success and bad behavior, but then all about. The importance of teaching and learning right from wrong. I really should do those videos as this is absurd to continue to write on BlueSky. But yeah – the ‘cognitive revolution’, while many great things have surely come in cognitive science – and no serious cognitive science would really dismiss any of the science of behaviorism. But as for its trumpeted ‘defeat’ (which is most definitely a thing, textbooks still flinch from it, authors bad-mouthing it frequently while simultaneously demonstrating a poor understanding of the science), that was never a thing within its ongoing research and practice. But in terms of public and interdisciplinary acceptance, it sadly has been.
Many people know this, but maybe don’t seem to put all the pieces together, or don’t know how many others know it as well. Because it flies in the face of how our economy works (rich rewarded, poor = punished). Our prisons (compliant = rewarded, criminals = punished). Our religions (not all, but many = good acts = rewarded by God, evil acts = punished). But didn’t I just talk about how everything was reward and punishment? Bad behaviorism is common. Remember how specific I was. Proper schedules of reinforcement and punishment are incredibly specific. Often requiring immediacy – nothing like the economy, criminal justice or religion, which is slow and messy. And the privileged are usually rewarded for already being privileged and the disadvantaged punished for being disadvantaged.
But the cognitive revolution sailed on, and everyone seemed to kind of miss the boat – even as, honestly behaviorism kept doing its own little clinical thing and contributed a great deal in the fields of autism (and other diagnoses that may indicate support) of ABA as well as Relational Frame Theory leading to the very successful ACT. But a larger public acceptance has clearly been derailed and I can only imagine we’d have made more progress on *environmental* solutions instead of focusing on individuals as the locus of social issues if we hadn’t decided to head the words of known Epstein-friend and admirer Noam Chomsky. Sorry guys, I really can’t resist!). Because the shift would be epistemic and structural: the cause is not inside the mind, but in the environmental variables within which the individual is responding and creating a learning history. I think the real issue is just how radically liberal & egalitarian this. As Skinner intended in Beyond Freedom & Dignity: the greatest, wealthiest person and the worst, poorest person are total creations of their environments. They are creations of *society*. So basically most of the bad stuff that keeps happening – war, crime, poverty, neglect, poor parenting, abuse, exploitation, inequality, etc. is due to structural systems in place which perpetuate unequal access to resources, etc. in the environment which then creates inequality in human behavior as well. People who accomplish more do so because they were given more resources (financial, social, parenting, community, etc.)
In a review of Skinner's book, linguist Noam Chomsky argued that the generativity of language shows that it cannot simply be learned, that there must be some innate "language acquisition device". Many have seen this review as a turning point, when cognitivism took the place of behaviorism as the mainstream in psychology. Behavior analysts generally viewed the criticism as somewhat off point.[6] However, it is undeniable that psychology turned its attention elsewhere, and the review was very influential in helping to produce the rise of cognitive psychology.

Cognitive theories Cognitive development theorists, Jean Piaget (hereby referred to as Piaget) and Lawrence Kohlberg (hereby referred to as Kohlberg) have shown that the moral development during childhood occurs in stages and is mirrored by other cognitive changes in the child's brain. Piaget referred to himself as a genetic epistemologist, interested in the process of development of human knowledge. He explained that Genetic Epistemology attempts to explain knowledge, and in particular scientific knowledge, based on its history, its sociogenesis, and especially the psychological origins of the notions and operations upon which it is based. According to Piaget's theory, morality is formed in two stages. Take, for example, the progressive rallying cry to “Believe science.” This certainly seems to be a good idea, especially on clearly settled topics such as the efficiency of vaccines and the reality of climate change. But what about those issues where the science—and more importantly the scientists—deeply disagree? Who exactly are we trusting then? After all, there are good faith, legitimate debates occurring around issues ranging from the effects and efficiency of long-term psychiatric drug use in children to support options for autistic people to the ethics of AI. None of this is settled, and experts—credentialed experts—disagree.

Benjamin Bloom developed a taxonomy of cognitive learning objectives. If we think of these as a hierarchy of increasingly complex levels of critical analysis, we see that when applied to political thought, those with worldviews that require adherence to strict dogma are generally relegated to the lower domains, as usage of higher domains risk subversion of the authority of the dogma itself. The progressive and conservative worldviews can basically be defined by an epistemological value set and approach to knowledge authority according to their respective use of these taxonomic levels. Conservatism tends towards a dogmatism of comfort, order, stasis and chauvinism, while progressivism is open to discomfort and change in the service of egalitarianism and humility. To properly utilize higher order levels requires embracing authorities external to dogmas - accepting new ideas and facts with a genuine openness and curiosity. Yet it means overturning sacred cows and comfortable traditions and power structures. It means giving up of one's self and ones attachments. In order to do this, to access the deepest levels of knowledge making, only liberalist values like egalitarianism and pluralism can provide the required prosocial structures and networks that allow for external authorities. Universities and journalism, the arts and critical culture are all forms of this type of meaning-making accessible only through liberalist ideals. To the extent that conservatism engages in higher order cognitive analysis, it will be constrained by its own illiberal traditionalist dogma.

In brief, we use lower-order cognitive information processing to construct working memory mental models when thinking and having experiences. That’s not novel but the next part is. I proposed that a least two mental models are in play, one is non-conscious (i.e. pre-conscious), and the other is conscious. The very short summary is that the output of the pre-conscious model cognitively initiates goal-directed behavior and speech non-consciously. But the pre-conscious model also feeds the second mental model non-consciously to foster conscious experiences. The conscious mental model then feeds back to the pre-conscious mental model, allowing you to be conscious of what you were just conscious of thereby sustaining mental coherence moment to moment. This work in progress suggests why what we say and what we do are not necessarily fully consistent with each other, and why both are not necessarily fully consistent with what we consciously experience. That’s why we need conscious narratives to tie it all together.
