The image was edited in Darktableā€¦ I applied my Trichrome Infrared Present (or Style as Darktable calls it) that I have been working on for a while (and have used in a previous challenge) toā€”hopefullyā€”introduce a subtle sense of surrealism with the colours. The process of the preset (style) is:- The Exposure module increases the exposure a smidge, and adjusts the black point a tad. Then the Colour equaliser module changes the greens to a red colour and the blues to an ā€œinkyā€ blue. The Lens Correct module then introduces a little chromatic aberration to the image to emulate the slight haloing youā€™d likely see in trichrome infrared images. And it ends by running the Velvia module, with all at default as Iā€™ve always found it to be sufficient. After I had applied my preset (style), I flipped the image horizontally to, in theory, introduce into the viewerā€™s subconscious the idea that something might not be quite right with the image. The idea was that it would hopefully be subtle, that the viewer would have to search for what feels wrong. But itā€™s ended up even more subtle than I planned, as it turns out the emergency exit sign that sparked the idea doesnā€™t have a specified default format, meaning it will still look ā€œrightā€ to anyone viewing it. It has affected other things though, such as text, and the logo on the football shirt that one of the people sitting in the pews is wearing, so hopefully it still works as intended.

The image was edited in Darktableā€¦ I started by converting the image to black and white with the Colour Calibration module, using the Ilford HP5 preset. Then, using the Colour Balance RGB module, I adjusted the highlights and shadows, playing with the sliders until I was vaguely happy with the results. I then activate the Haze Removal module, hoping that in removing the atmospheric haze it would also remove a little of the light that crept its way into the darker areas in the haze. Thankfully, it did. I activated the Contrast Equaliser moduleā€™s sharpen option. Then I activated the Sigmoid module. Finally, I cropped the image to make the cyclist a little more central to the final image by increasing their size in the frame, and by decreasing the overall amount of bright patches leaving the cyclist in the most prominent one.

The image was edited in Darktableā€¦ I started, as I so often do, by upping the exposure a smidge to counter darkening that would happen during the coming steps. Then I cropped the image to remove a lot of the sky that was visible in the foreground of the raw image, and to make the road a larger part of the final image, using it to draw the viewer through and add to the sense of depth. I then activated the Colour Calibration module, converting the image to black and white using the Ilford HP5 preset (my go-to preset). Then I played with the Colour Balance RGB module, using it to adjust the contrast. I activated the Tone Equaliser module, setting it to ā€˜strongā€™ I then activated the Filmic, Local Contrast, and Velvia modules, leaving them all at their default settings. Finally, I added a vignette, adjusting its placement so that instead of the usual full circle affecting all of the image, it was instead a semi-circle, arching over the road, darkening the trees, and creating a tunneling effect with light. At least that was the aim.

The image was edited in Darktableā€¦ I started by using Darktableā€™s Negadoctor module to invert the film negative - having never used the module I was unsure if my computer could handle it. Thankfully it did so with not a hint of a burning smell. Then I rotated the image and cropped it square, trying to keep it as close to the original composition as possible while removing the borders and slivers of other frames on the film. Whether it was the automated part of the inversion process, or something I had done during it, I donā€™t know, but I noticed a slight colour cast to the image so I activated the Colour Balance RGB module and removed the Chroma (saturation) from the image. Then I buggered about adding a tone curve until I was vaguely happy with the result. Finally I used the Graduated Density module to effectively burn the sky as I didnā€™t want the brightness of it to detract from the couple.

To the left of the image is the Feng Shang Princess, a floating Chinese restaurant. Next to the restaurant, standing and nesting on various bits of debris in the canal, are a number of moorhens and a single grey heron. Behind them a number of canal boats that look to have seen better days are moored against the overgrown bank. The image was edited in Darktableā€¦ I cropped the image into a square format reminiscent of one of the Holgaā€™s frame mask inserts. Then I upped the exposure a smidge. I played around in the Colour Balance RGB module, eyeballing it to get a somewhat ā€œfilm colourā€ look. I then activate the Tone Equaliser module, setting it to the ā€˜softā€™ preset. Then using the Lens Correct module I added a little distortion to mimic the effects of the cheap plastic lens that most Holga 120ā€™s have (I believe the glass one isnā€™t much better, but as Iā€™ve never tried that one myself, I donā€™t know). I added a small sprinkle of grain using the Grain module. Finally I added a small amount of blur in the Blur module to again mimic the effects of the cheap plastic lens. People who know of the Holga might be surprised to not see some form of light leak. The reason for the omission is that I used to tape the hell out of my Holga, it is not because I forgot that I was going to add one until just now as I was writing this alt text on the post and decided it was too late.

In the image the building known as the Walkie-Talkie can be seen on the other side (along with a bunch of others the names of which I donā€™t know), on the right hand side of the image a small boat is in motion on the river, and to the left of the image a portion of the museum ship HMS Belfast can be seen. The image was edited in Darktableā€¦ I rotated the image to landscape orientation - the RAW file had opened in portrait orientation. I increased the exposure a smidge. I converted the image to monochrome in the Monochrome module, applying a yellow filter. I then activated the Colour Balance RGB module (moving it so that it appeared after the Monochrome module in the order of module otherwise the colour added wouldnā€™t show), adding greens to the shadows, yellows to the highlights, and increasing the overall saturation and brightness of the added colours a tad. Then I activated the Tone Equaliser module, setting it to the ā€˜softā€™ preset. I then activated the Haze Removal module. Finally I cropped the image using the CinemaScope aspect ratio, because movie.

Due to the processing all areas of the image that would be green, such as the grass, trees and bushes etc are now a rather unnatural orangey red, and the sky has an almost ink like appearance. The image was edited in Darktableā€¦ In the Exposure module I increased the exposure a smidge, and adjusted the black point a tad. I then used the Colour equaliser module to change the greens to a red colour and the blues to an ā€œinkyā€ blue, based on reference images online. Then I activated the lens correct module, but instead of performing lens corrections, I used it to introduce a little chromatic aberration to the image to emulate the slight haloing youā€™d likely see in trichrome infrared images. I then activated the Velvia module, leaving it all at default as Iā€™ve always found it to be sufficient. Finally I added grain, playing around with it until I was happy.

The image was edited in Darktableā€¦ I downloaded the Panoramic version of the shot. Having found Darktable was unable to open it, I converted it with Adobe DNG Converter. Once it was converted I found the image to be just shy of 500 MB, meaning my computer was unable to process it in Darktable without the looming threat of a small fire. I then downloaded the central shot from the panorama sequence. I increased the exposure a little and ran Darktableā€™s automated lens correction module (itā€™s calculations based on the images EXIF data). I then used the Colour Calibration module to convert the image to black and white. Using the Tone Equaliser module I then pulled the shadows a little and recovered the highlights a smidge. Then I activated the Filmic RGB module, running it in automatic as itā€™s much smarter than I am. I then used the Contrast Equaliser module to lower the mid-tone clarity a little and increase sharpening slightly. I added grain, playing around with a view to emulate the silver halide crystals in silver gelatin prints. I then added a vignette, lowering the saturation a little to emulate fall-off sometimes seen when an enlarger has been used. Finally, I was a little unhappy with how the sky was looking after what I had done to the image, so I activated the Graduated Density Filter, adding a yellow filter to add a little something to the sky.

The image was edited in Darktable. I increased the exposure a little. Then using the Monochrome module I converted the image to monochrome, applying an orangey/yellow filter. I activated the Split-Toning module, selecting blue for the shadows and a white/grey for the highlights, keeping the blending mode as standard. I then activated the Haze Removal module. Finally I cropped the image to remove some of the trees because I thought having less trees visible helped create a colder feeling to the image.

I started by increasing the exposure a smidge. Then, using the Colour Balance RGB module, I made adjustments to the Global Saturation and Global Chroma. I then activated the Filmic Module, using auto-levels because itā€™s far smarter than I am. Then I added some local contrast. I then converted the image to black and white, using the Colour Calibration module, setting it to Ilford HP5. I activated the Tone Equaliser module, setting it to ā€˜softā€™. Then I used the Colour Zone module (having moved it so that it sat before the black and white conversion in the order of the modules) to in effect dodge and burn the image. I flipped the image vertically, and cropped it, to make the memorial the focus, whilst alsoā€”hopefullyā€”introducing an idea of abstraction to the image. Then, using the Graduated Density module, I darkened up the half of the image that wasnā€™t a reflection on the water. Finally, using the soften module, I added the smallest amount of softening (the smallest amount it would let me), to soften the image (mainly the non-reflection part) toā€”hopefullyā€”lessen how immediately obvious it is which half is which.

The image was edited in Darktable. I increased the exposure. Then I converted the image to black and white, using the Monochrome Module for once, setting the filter to yellow. Then I activated the Grain Module, decreasing it from the default 1600 because it was a bit much. I then cropped the image to make the focus the person I'd spotted. Finally, I added a mild vignette, toā€”hopefullyā€”focus the eye.

I then converted the image to black and white, using the Colour Calibration module (because, quite frankly, itā€™s the easiest/least involved/quickest method), setting it to Ilford HP5. Then I activated the Colour Equaliser module (making sure to move it so that itā€™s before the black and white conversion in the order of modules), and used it to in effect dodge and burn parts of the image. Then I activated the Denoise (profiled) module as a little noise was introduced to some areas during the previous step. Finally, I cropped the image a smidge.

This image is actually unfinished because I found out my laptop canā€™t run the necessary modules for what I wanted to do. It was supposed to look like a postcard with creases in it to add another layer of texture to the edit. Below are the steps I was able to complete up to the point where things went to s**tā€¦ As has been the case for all my edits so far in the EKC Post Process Challenge, I increased the exposure to counter darkening of the image during subsequent steps. I activated the Contrast Equaliser module's clarity function, then activated a second Contrast Equaliser module, for the sharpen function, and cranked them both up to bring out the texture of the buildings, the road, and the sky (in reality increase the texture of everything, but those three were my main aim). I then played with the Colour Equaliser module (for quite some time), throwing sliders around until I liked what I saw. I paid particular attention to the reds and greens because, Christmassy. Then I opened the Composite module, dragged a texture overlay image to it, and watched Darktable crash. Hoping it was a freak incident I redid previous steps and opened the Composite module again, dragged a texture overlay image to it, and watched Darktable crash again. Then I had a strop. Googled what the likely issue was (itā€™s my laptop. She canna take any more, captain!). Had another strop. Then I decided to just do a black and white edit (the next image).

The image was edited in Darktable (I had to process the jpeg as the raw file was too large for my laptop to handle). I increased the exposure a smidge, as I always tend to do in order to counter darkening that happens during subsequent steps. Then I fumbled around for a time not having a clue what to do, before I settled on: I activated the Denise (profiled) module, changing the colour mode to RGB, and increasing the strength to 4, making use of the fairly extreme softening that you usually try to avoid when using the module. Then in the Diffuse/Sharpen module I activated the ā€˜Simulated Line Drawingā€™ preset to (hopefully?!) introduce a feeling of brush strokes. Then I changed the blending mode to Harmonic Mean, and changed the opacity to 50%, as more than that was just too much. Then I exported the image - which I had to do at a much reduced size compared to the original as my knackered old laptop struggles to export images that use the Diffuse/Sharpen module.

The image was processed in Darktable using the Colour Contrast (played with until it looked right to my eye), Split Toning (introducing blue to the shadows and purple to the highlights), RGB Curve (played with until it looked right to my eye), Exposure, Soften (to give the softer appearance of instant images, and to lower the saturation to give the faded appearance), and Framing modules.

The image was processed in Darktable. I rotated the image a little toā€”in theoryā€”give a more straight-on "holiday snapshot" feel. I then increased the exposure a little to counter the darkening that happens during subsequent steps in Darktable. I messed (the best way to describe my editing style!) with Darktable's Tone Equalizer, Color Balance RGB, and Grain modules. Then, in Darktable's Colour Zone module, I lowered the saturation of the blues and greens a little as I noticed they seemed to have degraded much more than anything else on the sample prints I used as a reference.

I increased the exposure because Iā€™ve found subsequent steps tend to darken it a little, then I did some work in Darktableā€™s Colour Balance RGB, Colour Zones, Filmic, and Velvia modules. I did some work in the Local Contrast module, and then added a graduated density filter weighted towards orange and lowered its opacity a little.

Macro shot of a small portion of a purple flower, the name of which I do not know because I shot this in 2021, and because my father-in-law whoā€™s garden the potted plant was in canā€™t tell me either because he knows nothing about plants, he just gets the ones heā€™s told he should get by my mother-in-law (they donā€™t live together, theyā€™re exes but friends, itā€™s a whole thing), and he promptly loses the little name/care thingy that comes with them.

It was part of a supermarket bouquet that my wifeā€™s gran bought when she went to the shop to get her whisky, more years ago than I care to admit, so if there was any information given it was so long ago, and my memory is so terrible, I no longer know. And none of the suggestions on the iPhone lookup match.) The petals are pink and whiteā€”fading from pink at the centre to white at the endsā€”and the centre of the flower is yellow. The flower is covered in water droplets.
