When he failed to do so, in part because of a serious injury, the same judge who had ordered the restitution ordered Doby to serve a 45-year sentence for a probation violation. That ruling was overturned on appeal, but Doby still owes the original restitution amount. His case of excessive, unpayable restitution is not unique, experts say. Florida leads the nation in the number of these agreements. In Palm Beach County, about 150 of the sheriff department’s 1,500 officers are authorized to make immigration arrests. The effect of these so-called 287(g) arrangements is that people who call the police for help end up being detained and, in some cases, deported. The standard mirrors had distorted the way McKinney and other incarcerated men had viewed themselves for years. Highway Patrol Trooper Scott Collins fatally shot 28-year-old Brandon Webster during a traffic stop in 2019. Collins said he did so in self-defense after Webster tried to run him over. Investigations ensued but no charges were filed against Collins and no one publicly disputed his story. We now know, however, that an internal investigation concluded that Collins fired at the side of Webster’s car, a use of force that the lead state investigator said violated both state law and internal policies. Ya’ good to go.” Joseph Wilson gives us the lowdown on a recent “hair show” in the vocational training area for student barbers at Green Haven Correctional Facility in New York. The twist is that the incarcerated barbers, all male, took women’s hairstyling instruction from a tonsorial services educator who believes that women’s styling prepares men to be better barbers. There were about 20 entrants in the show last month, and some of the men were initially skeptical of their assignments for women’s styling, but the event was a big success. “They are more than men in prison.
