We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. I am reminded that the God of the biblical narrative is a migrant God. A God who migrated with Abram and Sari to a new land; a migrant God who liberated and accompanied the Israelites as they fled the Egyptian empire; a migrant God incarnate in a small child carried by his parents to a foreign country in order to escape and flee the political violence of a king. As pilgrims and travelers on the journey of faith, we, as Christians, stand in solidarity with immigrant and migrant communities. We demonstrate love (one possible translation of agape is solidarity) through hospitality with our neighbors who have, and who have not yet, been able to obtain legal permission to justify their lives in the United States.

Against the mass brutality of war and police oppression, solidarity with the victims of that oppression. Against the inhumanity of organized affluence, solidarity with those who are excluded from any participation in the benefits of almost unlimited plenty. Where "the world" means in fact "military power," "wealth," "greed," then the Christian remains against it. When the world means those who are concretely victims of these demonic abstractions (and even the rich and mighty are their victims too) then the Christian must be for it and in it and with it.
