7 PM Went to have a family dinner w my mum and sister. Introduced my mother to the concept of fursonas. She contemplated dog and cow but landed on hen. Ally: Theo, you should be a guinea pig, not a cow. Theo, a guinea pig: A guinea pig?! 8 PM Ally: He asked who my hall pass would be and I was like, I think the whole concept of a hall pass is offensive and disrespectful. Theo: Ok Ally: So he dropped it, but if he had dug a little deeper... Ally: I do have one, it's T-Pain.
3 PM The drawing nodes are organised with nodes called PEGS, which store position data. You connect drawings underneath pegs, and pegs are the nodes which are animated. When the pegs are organised properly, you can make complex structures animatable. (Attach a peg under the hand for a prop, and the prop will follow its movement!) You organise the output with 'cutter' and 'composite' nodes, so you end up with a 3-node basic tree. 4 PM So eventually your whole design is broken up into sometimes a hundred pieces, all connected to move together. b_eye peg and comp -> eyes peg + comp -> face p+c -> head p+c -> head + neck p+c -> upper body p+c You also add 'deformers' carefully to let animators curve and warp the shapes. The node view ends up looking kinda scary. You can export this node tree as a file and drop it into a scene, and then animators pose it out on a timeline. And that's what rigging is!
1 PM The other day my sister was visiting while I was working and I realised she, like a lot of people, didn't really know what my job is. Theo: So the designers draw it, and then we make it in the animation software Ally: What do you mean you make it? It's already there? So I'll use the next couple hours to explain it as best I can. Designers give us a drawing and our job is to build a puppet based on the drawing so that the animators can move it around. 2 PM The first step is to make individual drawing 'nodes' and trace pieces of the design onto them. Usually a design has multiple angles, so each drawing node needs to have multiple substitutions.
11 AM Working working I have 2 freelance gigs alongside my day job. #1 has a big deadline in less than a week, so I've been prioritising that all week, and haven't done anything for #2. So today I gotta haul ass a little. Having some trouble hauling ass because I am sleepy. Theo: Need another coffee... 12 PM Take a walk to get banh mi and coffee Bakery worker: Ice coffee and crackling, right? Theo: Yes! Theo: (Omg! I'm a regular) Bakery worker: Mumble mumble Theo: Pardon? Bakery worker: Nmnfmn Theo: S... sorry? Bakery worker: THAT COMES TO $18.30! Theo: OH! I'm sorry! Bakery worker: I'm sorry about that! Theo: No! I'm sorry!
9 AM Theo: Can I sit down please? Rue: Zzzz My setup: Monitor Laptop XPPen screen tablet (NEW!) Kmart keyboard Now I have the screen tablet I don't really need the extra monitor anymore. 10 AM Drawing hourlies. So diligent. (I should be working!!) Rue is still sleeping happily in her spot, slowly giving me a lower back injury.
