The photo above was taken in Erbil in 2013, as I conducted my research on the barriers to employment for Syrian refugee youth in southeast Turkey and Kurdish Iraq. Shortly after, ISIS launched its offensive in Iraq, where fighting subsequently displaced millions of Iraqis from their homes.
