You believed in universal love (jian ai) — impartial concern for everyone, against the Confucian gradation of moral concern by relationship. As we leave this annual meeting today, let us remember the task that is ever before us, pressing on toward the goal, a goal not of our own making, but one more glorious than we can imagine, a goal of living into and recognizing the dignity of our magnificent, glorious humanity, bound for the promised land as we are bound by God who is leading us there, bound by the God who ultimately IS our promised land. O Lord our Governor, * how exalted is your Name in all the world!
