SOME of this deformation, this folding, appears to have been recent. That is, the volcanic plains seem to have been folded, which means the folds are younger than the plains. Those folds we think are younger are highlighted with light blue arrows in this figure (panel (b), from earlier).

Why does this apparent timing matter? Well, the tesserae (remember, it's just a Venus-specific morphology term) are generally interpreted as the oldest preserved stuff on the planet (left on this figure). But these adjacent plains are interpreted to be the *youngest* units (pink and red units).
