Check out this figure: Three sites on Earth of vastly different ages where the crust has been shortened to make large folds (i.e., mountains) and smaller folds, all of which have the same orientation.

The reason these comparisons matter is because we understand how large-scale crustal shortening works on Earth. And now, it seems that—at least in places—something similar has happened on Venus. And if we're right about the timing, some of this deformation is young (i.e., geologically recent).
