The spirit of hope and optimism that permeates US culture is dimmed. But it's not extinguished. This dark moment will pass. There are better days ahead, if we work for them.

This is to say, I choose to remain optimistic. I believe these United States can, one day, fully realise its potential. I'll play my part to help ensure that, come the tricentennial, we really will have something to celebrate. (And I'm damned if I won't outlive those grifting fuckers.)
