‘Mould-Free’ Coffee and the Consequences of Negative Wellness Marketing Fear sells, and “clean” or “mould-free” coffee is big business. But such marketing claims have a wider negative impact, implying that all other coffee is somehow contaminated and not to be trusted.

Not Lying, But Not Telling the Truth You might be asking: Who cares if companies promote their coffee as “clean” and “mould-free”? It’s technically true, and it’s just a marketing tactic anyway. What’s the harm? But these claims are harmful—not just because they actively mislead consumers, but because they sow suspicion about an entire industry. Underneath such claims is a wider implication: that every other company’s coffee is not clean, is not mould-free. “We know that negative framing is more persuasive than positive framing”, says Spencer Ross, a coffee researcher and associate professor of marketing at UMass Lowell’s Manning School of Business. “If coffee brands are saying they’re mycotoxin-free, the negative framing is that other brands are not, when in reality it’s almost impossible to verify”.

Coffees at other high street chains are also becoming expensive. A flat white is ÂŁ5.20 to take away in a central London Starbucks, and ÂŁ4.70 in Costa.
Lavazza has had to pass costs on to consumers. A flat white at Lavazza’s main cafe near Regent Street in London has risen from £4 to £4.40 to take away, and from £5.50 to £6.50 to drink in.

Starbucks spends about $400 million a year on software alone, Chief Technology Officer Anand Varadarajan told workers in an internal forum earlier this year. "There's clear opportunities to reduce the spend in software," Varadarajan said, according to a recording of the meeting reviewed by Bloomberg News. In-house software can be cheaper, an incentive for companies such as Starbucks, which is looking to cut $2 billion in costs as part of a broader turnaround effort. Though in the long run, building can lead a company to pay higher maintenance and labor costs.

Nichibei United Corp, an Osaka-based energy trading company, has planted over 1,100 Typica coffee trees in eight greenhouses since it began coffee farming as a new business in 2024 in Soja, Okayama Prefecture. It was not easy for a company from a different industry to start cultivating coffee, admits Kenji Tsujino, who oversees the coffee business's on-site operations. "Agriculture is tough. We have faced a series of unexpected events," said Tsujino, who had worked for the trading company's petroleum-based detergent business before being transferred to coffee operations. Such events included the flooding of the greenhouses by rain in the first year, which required the company to replant trees after installing underground drainage pipes.

To demonstrate the difference in corporate conduct in bargaining with workers for a first contract versus corporate mergers and acquisitions, Table 1 shows examples of companies who have engaged in negotiations with workers and corporate mergers. While Starbucks completed a merger in 67 days, they have taken at least 1,643 days (and counting) to bargain a first contract with their unionized workers.

SUMMARY Two decades after the first Coffee Barometer, the structural conditions shaping the coffee sector remain largely unchanged. Pro ducer incomes still fall below living income benchmarks, labour is poorly rewarded, climate vulnerability continues to deepen, and most value is captured downstream rather than in producing countries. Sustainability commitments have multiplied, yet systemic reform has not followed. This report examines the coffee economy not as a collection of sustain ability initiatives, but as a political and economic system shaped by con centration, power, and commercial incentives that consistently produce inequitable outcomes.
Does Nestlé keep most of the money from coffee instead of farmers? No. We believe farmers should earn enough to support a decent standard of living for themselves and their families. We pay competitive prices and premiums for the quality specifications we require and we pay a premium price for coffee that is responsibly sourced. Farmers participating in the Nescafé Plan and Nespresso Sustainable Quality Plan field programs have no obligation to sell their coffee to our suppliers, so we and our suppliers need to offer attractive prices and premiums to remain a preferred buyer.

‘Muppets’: Cafe boss erupts, says venues making $35 an hour Phillip Di Bella, founder of Di Bella Coffee and head of The Coffee Commune, an initiative representing more than 1300 independent cafe owners, outlined how much profit an average cafe makes on a public holiday. When making a baseline of 100 coffees an hour at $7 each, so $700 in revenue, wages would swallow $350 of that, goods would cost $140, GST would be $70 and utilities and rent would take $105. So the total profit made on those coffees would be just $35.
