This evening, several organizers were arrested during a Tax the Rich Rally on Michigan Avenue in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood. The organizers are part of the People’s Unity Platform, which has been gathering support for Mayor Brandon Johnson’s head tax proposal. 🎥: Corli Jay for The TRiiBE

It’s hard to put this year in words. Running in quicksand comes to mind. With each passing year as publisher of The TRiiBE, we become more emboldened about our place in this media landscape, despite the odds. President Donald Trump’s assault on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives meant that journalism funders were more hesitant to support our work. So our community stepped in. Friends, family, readers, industry leaders and complete strangers offered advice and a financial lifeline. If you made a contribution to The TRiiBE this year, you are a difference-maker. You are the reason why we are still here. 
 In 2025, our team took on some of the most mentally and physically taxing work that we’ve ever done. As a team of six, we collaborated with local and national partners to get the word out about Chicago’s resistance to ICE. With less funding, we put in more hours to deliver breaking-news coverage of federal law enforcement activity to keep Chicagoans informed and empowered. We even managed to publish colorful profiles of local artists, produced in our new home studio in East Garfield Park. There is so much more that we hope to do with our studio to expand our storytelling capabilities. But this is a really difficult climate for the journalism industry and Black founders.

NEW — Videos obtained by The TRiiBE show federal agents detaining a Laugh Factory worker on Chicago’s North Side this morning. He and another person were detained around 9:20 a.m., according to rapid response teams.

HAPPENING NOW — Thousands gathered in Chicago’s Grant Park for the “No Kings” rally and protest. Chicago joins cities across the country in today’s action condemning the President Donald Trump administration. Today’s march will take the streets of downtown Chicago. It’s one of many actions Chicagoans have taken in continued protest against Trump and his authoritarian politics. 🎥: The TRiiBE

CHICAGO – Today, Governor JB Pritzker released the following statement after the Illinois National Guard was informed that the Texas National Guard is preparing deployments to Illinois: “This evening, President Trump is ordering 400 members of the Texas National Guard for deployments to Illinois, Oregon, and other locations within the United States. No officials from the federal government called me directly to discuss or coordinate. “We must now start calling this what it is: Trump’s Invasion. It started with federal agents, it will soon include deploying federalized members of the Illinois National Guard against our wishes, and it will now involve sending in another state’s military troops. ​ “I call on Governor Abbott to immediately withdraw any support for this decision and refuse to coordinate. There is no reason a President should send military troops into a sovereign state without their knowledge, consent, or cooperation. ​ “The brave men and women who serve in our national guards must not be used as political props. This is a moment where every American must speak up and help stop this madness."

CHICAGO – Today, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker released the following statement following a request the Illinois National Guard received from the Trump Administration’s Department of War: ​ “This morning, the Trump Administration’s Department of War gave me an ultimatum: call up your troops, or we will. It is absolutely outrageous and un-American to demand a Governor send military troops within our own borders and against our will. ​ “In the coming hours, the Trump Administration intends to federalize 300 members of the Illinois National Guard. They will pull hardworking Americans out of their regular jobs and away from their families all to participate in a manufactured performance -- not a serious effort the protect public safety. For Donald Trump, this has never been about safety. This is about control.
