Thinking Person's Guide to Autism @thinkingautism.com · Dec 7

When a beloved animal dies, what is a helpful way to help you or your autistic loved one cope? My son was a huge fan of @calacademy.bsky.social's Claude the Albino Alligator, and our red-eyed friend was always part of his routine for visiting. More info about Claude: tinyurl.com/RIPclaude #autism

1. Keep a journal. 2. Maybe write up an obituary to display prominently in the kitchen or wherever family memos are out up. 3. Memorial service. 4.funeral.

I really can’t say. I’ve been through it so many times with family pets, & clients, & people like Claude (they’re all people) each loss is different. The sudden, unnecessary ones are the worst. When you can’t tell them goodbye, I love you. Which none of us got to tell Claude. It’s always OK to cry?

When our first dog died, my kids put together a sort of altar/shrine on a cabinet top - all the dog's favorite toys, bowls, treat jar, etc., with a votive lit for ea of her years.

Shrines are how I deal with people and pet deaths (they are the same to me). It can be something as simple as a hat on a shelf or as complex as a mantle covered in photos and belongings. For when you don’t have objects, I might make a donation in their memory or do an activity they liked.
