Awareness... pppfffffff!! 🙄 Actual knowledge and acceptance is what we need. Not half-arsed ads portraying harmful stereotypes.
How they talk about a "cure" for autism, or act like having an autistic child is worse than a dead one. Or act like being the parent of an autistic child is so difficult, while ignoring anything that would actually help their child to navigate allistic society.
In this society the “awareness” becomes a revenue model. ie; Come in and get a stim toy with our special combo while experiencing utter sensory chaos.
The fact it is always aimed at how to make me as an AuDHD person more acceptable to hobbyless losers. (That is not all neurotypical people. Just the ones that insist I conform.)
I have already told my friend about it and asked him to go see it with me. We grew up with the cartoon when it was new. Such great memories.
People are AWARE of Autism. What they arent aware of is all the b.s. people with Autism have to deal with on a daily basis. We have a "walk for Autism" in my community and I fail to see how these polite events, that are only attended by those who are already AWARE, are helping.
How it seems like in addition to not getting some actual autistic people at the forefront of these organizations, it seems like it's always a half ass measure to adjust get the general populace to understand autism. It's like, what is it you have to do to be met half way ?
I hate that I can't avoid the hate. Doesn't matter what I block. Doesn't matter what I mute. I could be watching a makeup tutorial, a cartoon, a morning talk show, the most innocuous thing imaginable...and there it is.
I'm tired of neurodiversity lite: companies thinking that a few language and symbol changes are all they need to understand autistic people. It's about more than that. It's about respect, inclusivity, and caring. If your post talks about us like we're broken, unwanted burdens, it's not acceptance.
Its only a problem because "autism awareness" is a different word for eugenics and violence. I'm genuinely shocked I haven't seen much this far into April, not that previous months haven't done enough.
I’m bracing for some horrific political news regarding autism. I don’t know what to expect, but I’m terribly pessimistic this year and I don’t know how I’ll get through if something happens.
Oh, I have a wonderful article nearly finished for this month. It focuses on what autists think about the "cure" and "treatment" of autism. I just need a few more sources to add to it. So, any relevant sources please offer them. I want a comical amount of sources for this.
I loathe the tv ads- seeing them with my son, I wanted to disappear. Portraying a sad lonely kid whose parents are apparently trying to fix him with the help of whatever ad council. Horrible
It doesn’t actually do anything for us. People talk awareness bit don’t actually do anything to help autistic people
