Spellcheck and simple translations, along with grammar checks, have been around for decades. They are not intrinsically AI tools. Any AI inclusion in the software is part of a pattern to force adoption by existing tool users. Though I selected full ban in the options above, I do not include such tools as long as they don’t cross into generative territory. One thing that stands out for me in this survey: we need clearer language beyond generative AI and non-generative AI. And one fact is certain, publications that accept AI submissions have no place in the creative arts and no place in a SFWA-acknowledged list of publications. I'd also like to add that the situation with the Nebula Awards did make me suspicious of the board's understanding and stance. I appreciate the apology, but my faith that you are able to navigate the difficulties ahead is shaken. I am one person. I need an industry organization that will protect its members. As someone who is not eligible for compensation due to the lack explicit registration of copyright for any of my works, I’ve already been taken advantage of. I wouldn't have agreed to the use of my work if anyone had requested my approval. I feel enraged. It’s hard enough to believe in your own work and to put in the time year after year. Seeing our culture diminish the importance of true creative endeavors, and the importance of trying and failing and gaining skills, is an extra burden for us all. I hope you can prove my concerns are wrong and that SFWA will continue to advocate for writers. AI is here to stay, but its actual legitimate and legitimately helpful uses are currently not its only uses. It’s all about greed and profit, driven by people and organizations who don’t value creatives of any stripe (actors, visual artists, writers). It’s imperative that we say “no” both collectively and individually.
None of the offered responses really encompass my stance. I am against generative AI due to piracy and its enormous environmental issues. Additionally, there is already data available from studies that show leaning on AI for research / information purposes reduces a person's ability to think critically i.e., interrogate the information presented. If things continue as they are, we are likely to have swaths of people whose ability to identify propaganda or spin will be diminished (at the very least). I do not consider spellcheck or translation services an issue. However, saying I have no issue with non-generative AI is too broad a statement. I take a default opt-in policy. If it can be shown that it does no harm, and that it provides value, then I am fine with the tool. Looking for cancer cells? Sure. Other uses that show actual usefulness to individuals (rather than a profitmaking tool at the expense of individuals)? Okay. However, I think AI is being pushed down our throats across the board both in software and from a marketing perspective. Focusing solely on generative AI, it is a tool built on piracy looking for any broad commercial uses so that the owners of the technology can make back the enormous amounts of money they have invested. It is the antithesis of a tool intended to support individuals and individual creatives.
