Julia Langbein, first of all, I apologize, I was unfamiliar with your game. What a book. I never knew I needed a campus novel set in a French castle (owned by a Prince described as a “small gay clown") narrated to a sanctified omnipotent version of Monica Lewinsky, who, as you will recall, was going through some stuff the summer of 1998, the very same summer that Jean, our narrator, accidentally detonated both her present and her future due to a tawdry affair with the most obvious of all summer flings—a married professor twenty-five years her senior. Cool! And you sort of half-root for it, even though it is completely wrong and gross, but Saint J. Langbein is so tender with her characters, even the side characters (Sigrid, queen), that it feels less debased than simply the natural progression of spending so much time with attractive people in a castle in the French countryside! I would describe Julia Langbein’s sentences as “incantatory” which is a word I’ve never and likely never will say aloud but it feels exactly right. These pages explore much more than a teenager going a little insane due to having a crush; we tackle institutional power imbalances, the historical throughline of the (frowns to show I strongly disapprove) patriarchy, martyrdom, reclaiming your narrative, the callowness of youth and the hollowness of not-youth, and our weird, spooky relationship with the divine. Chuckle-aloud funny, incredibly messy, think Susan Choi’s My Education meets Ali Hazelwood’s Problematic Summer Romance meets Jennifer Egan’s The Keep meets the worst mistake of your young life. Bonus: I learned a lot about medieval churches, so AMA.
