Ao mesmo tempo, esses sujeitos também oferecem perspectivas críticas sobre a sociedade brasileira, desafiando ideologias dominantes e discursos oficiais. Como tais dinâmicas de ver e ser visto operam e têm operado nas culturas luso-brasileiras e em seus regimes de visibilidade? Este painel virtual da Midwest Modern Languages Association (MMLA) está aberto a propostas que explorem cenas de observação na literatura, nas artes, na história, no pensamento social e em outras formas de produção cultural, com enfoque em momentos em que sujeitos historicamente marginalizados—seja por motivos de raça, gênero, classe, sexualidade, deficiência, ou outros marcadores sociais—observam ou são observados. Convidamos apresentações sobre temas que podem incluir: Olhares e contra-olhares em representações de raça, gênero, classe e sexualidade; Intervenções artísticas e literárias que desafiam regimes dominantes de visibilidade; Objetivação e subjetivação em discursos médicos, antropológicos, artísticos ou literários; Sujeitos afro-brasileiros e indígenas como pensadores sociais e agentes críticos. Call for Papers — 2025 Midwest Modern Language Association (MMLA) 14-16 November 2025 | Milwaukee, WI To See and to Be Seen in Luso-Brazilian Cultures (Virtual panel) Literature, the social sciences, and the visual and performing arts have long framed Afro-Brazilian, Indigenous, queer, poor, and disabled subjects as objects of the gaze. Yet these subjects have also provided critical perspectives on Brazilian society, challenging dominant ideologies and official discourses. How do these dynamics of seeing and being seen operate within Luso-Brazilian cultures and regimes of visibility? This panel invites proposals that explore scenes of observation in literature, art, social thought, and other kinds of cultural production, focusing on moments when historically marginalized subjects—whether due to race, gender, class, disability, sexuality, or other social markers—either observe or are observed. We welcome presentations on topics that include, but are not limited to: The gaze and counter-gaze in representations of race, gender, class, and sexuality; Artistic and literary interventions that challenge dominant frameworks of visibility; Objectification and subjectification in medical, anthropological, artistic, and literary discourses; Afro-Brazilians and Indigenous subjects as social thinkers and agents of critique.
