Each morning the town's men and boys awake, Wives and mams feed them, Hand off tins of dripping stotties, pasties, and pobs, And wave them out the door, A flood of men rush down every street, Collecting others on the way, they find an opening in the earth, Don ceremonial hats, Collect eternal flame, And descend, 11 hours of darkness and dust, Their toil and their blood fuels empire, Great metal machines traverse the oceans, While small lungs suffocate on coal dust and sulphur.
