The cover to the 1967 Beano Summer Special. It is a beach scene, the tide is out as the end of the pier pictured is not in the sea. There are children building a sandcastle in the background, someone in a deck chair reading a paper, people in the sea and some sort of ferry boat on the horizon. Biffo the Bear is diving headfirst off the pier onto what we can only assume is the beach itself rather than the sea, although Buster’s speech bubble “What on Earth is Biffo up to? See back page” implies that all is not as it seems, a common occurrence with this pair. Biffo is wearing his usual red dungaree shorts, (although canonically he does have swimming trunks) his hands clasped together in front of him and his face is beaming joy, with rather rosey cheeks.

This depiction of the Doctor during to the artist’s decisions it looks like he has a rather scraggly moustache that spans the whole width of Pertwee’s mouth. During his tenure as the wandering Timelord Pertwee never fielded such face furniture (or at least I’m not aware of any photographic evidence of such).

Their missive reads Breaking News: The Pentagon made public what it called "never-before-seen" files on UFOs. The initial images are murky and show what could be anything. Chuck’s tweet is dated 8th May 2026.

Which is ironic considering that Norrin was confined to Earth at the time. The cover depicts the Silver Surfer (Norrin Radd) backdropped with a clear yellow sky swooping down from the top right to face a stocky turtle-like creature in the bottom left emerging from the street. It is balefully illuminated in red from below, which combined with the steam partially obscuring it creates the impression that it is emerging from the very depths of hell itself. The issue’s title ‘The Dawn Of The Doomsday Man’ is in the bottom right. The scene takes place the bustling New York thoroughfare in front of the UN. It is filled with startled bystanders who are backing away in panic from this creature, as well as onlookers in the windows of the skyscrapers in the background. It is from a time when men still wore hats, evinced by the startled gentleman in the foreground who has attempted to exit panel right so quickly his hat has fallen off and is suspended midair behind him. I hope he retrieves it. Spoiler warning, this does not occur in the comic, and the emerging creature isn’t the Doomsday Man.
