Yesterday, hours after being sworn into office, President Trump followed through on his campaign threat to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement. This short-sighted move shows a disregard for science and the well-being of people around the world, including Americans, who are already losing their homes, livelihoods, and loved ones as a result of climate change. But rest assured, climate action will continue. Those of us who have dedicated our lives and careers to stopping climate change know that the United States federal government has rarely been a significant force for climate action. There is no time to lament the lack of federal leadership on climate. Instead, we must seek out leadership elsewhere, building partnerships with others across the country and the globe. After Trump’s first withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, Americans stood up to reaffirm their commitment to stopping climate change. From business executives and local government officials to faith leaders and community organizers, people from all walks of life and every sector of society showed what climate leadership looks like. Now more than ever, we must support those leaders and encourage them to take science-based action to safeguard a healthy, prosperous world for ourselves and future generations.
