Ryan Wilcox is one of my favourite characters to write because he genuinely can't see himself clearly. He's not pretending to be humble. He's not fishing for reassurance. He just has real, sincere imposter syndrome in the middle of the most important assignment in human history — and somehow that makes the whole thing funnier and more tense at the same time. There's a moment in Chapter Two where he walks off into the New Mexico desert because he needs time to think, ends up half a mile from the limo, shouts back asking for a ride — and the aliens are already there. That's Ryan. Trying to avoid the aliens. Accidentally boarding their ship.
Ryan Wilcox has a problem that follows him everywhere: he's very good at his job, and nobody believes it — including him. He's twenty-six with a master's in politics, fluent in several languages, and the senior negotiators in Paris quietly credited his work for the treaty's success. They just didn't tell him that.
