Last night, DeWine signed the budget. His vetoes did not include the binary sex definition. There are potentially far-reaching consequences, without clear details on which state services will be affected or how. Because of this, we are advising people to consider the following possible contingency preparations for IDs and state services: - If you want to update your Ohio state ID, do it NOW - Identify your support network now; plug into local community spaces - If you need to sign up for a state-sponsored program, do it now - Request 90-day prescription refills, if possible - Move up check-in appointments for state services, if possible - Review state health insurance options - Check-in with your providers Binary Sex Definition Explained: Last night, DeWine signed the budget. His vetoes did not include the binary sex definition. The budget’s new binary sex definition is potentially aimed at the whole Ohio Revised Code used to direct state programs and services. There are huge potential expenses and consequences, without clear details on which state services will be affected or how it will be implemented. This could still be used to restrict IDs and access to other state services. If you experience any issues accessing services please document everything and also let us know. We will keep everyone updated as this situation develops. There were also a few of good vetoes from the budget, including but not limited to these two below. Thank you so much to all of the community members, and support organizations that helped in pressing for these vetos: ❌ Stops funding youth homeless shelters that help LGBTQ+ youth and families ❌ Requires that all materials in libraries with any LGBTQ+ content be made inaccessible to minors The legislature can override vetoes with a 3/5 majority any time before January 1st. We will continue to update with any changes that may arise.
BREAKING (GOOD) NEWS Trans, nonbinary, and intersex citizens can now change their gender on U.S. passports (including X)! A federal judge has expanded the injunction blocking the ban on gender marker changes on passports to include EVERYONE. We recommend folks do this ASAP before a new policy can be implemented. Note: this is not a final ruling; follow us for more details. Over 150 trans people were able to update gender markers and legal names yesterday! Thank you to all of the community partners who made this amazing pop up legal clinic possible, the volunteer attorneys and community members who donated their time, Equality Toledo for the use of their space, Black Trans Men of Ohio for the food and helping cover some of the filing costs in addition to the TransOhio Micro Grants Fund, Equality Ohio and Equitas Health for donating staff, TATs for volunteers, and everyone who donates to TransOhio so that we can continue to be there for the community. TOLEDO, OHIO Birth Certificate & Name Change Clinic Wednesday, April 30th 12 PM to 7:30 PM 1301 Jefferson Ave, Toledo, OH 43604 Hosted in the Equality Toledo Offices Above Planned Parenthood Residents of Lucas & surrounding counties can receive help with name changes and birth certificate corrections, if available. Trained attorneys and notaries will be available all day to help complete forms and answer any questions. Snacks will be available and the food pantry will also be open. Executive Orders have no power on their own. The State Department has to change its policy on passports for there to be any implementation, and that will not happen overnight. We don’t know what the real effects of the Executive Orders will be. There have not been any concrete changes to legal policies yet. Not everything proposed is actually something that can be executed. Some of this is meant to just cause fear, and not everything will happen in the same way/timeline everywhere. There will be legal challenges to the orders.
