The espresso machine station at some airport lounge in the lower 48. Three bottles of syrup sit off to the side, their smug nozzles arched to taunt all comers. One sugar-free vanilla would directly poison the author — the other two, caramel and hazelnut — seem benign, even sweet. But are they really?

Purple Wolf (a brightly colored wolf who, through sheer coincidence and good fortune, happens to be predominantly purple) and Mica (a brightly colored spotty saber lynx who knows he’s 🔥 but still enjoys hearing it) wax philosophical on Pop Tart flavorings.
