Older forms of English kept Latin's gender-specific suffixes tor and trix; -tor is for men and -trix is for women. So a male pilot is an aviator, a female pilot is an aviatrix. A male fighter is a gladiator, a female fighter is a gladiatrix. This contrasts with the modern system, where tor is for both men and women, and trix are for kids.

This week, November 13th-19th, is Transgender Awareness Week. Normally this would be a time to celebrate my trans identity and share some of my joy with my friends. But things changed last week. Things changed when the GOP spent $215 MILLION on anti-trans attack ads. Things changed when Democrats didn't fight back. Things changed when you voted for Trump... or not at all. Things changed when President Elect Trump put out a video saying that he will have bounties put on trans people in bathrooms and that he will deny federal funds to hospitals that offer any kind of gender affirming healthcare to adults or children. This year, I ask you to be aware of the trans people in your life. Take notice of us in your communities. Because over the next year or so, you'll notice us less and less. Some of us are leaving a city/state/country that has clearly voiced that it does not want us. Some of us are going into hiding. We'll still be around, but not as openly trans; it's not safe to do that anymore. Some of us will stand and fight. We hope you'll stand with us. Some of us won't be around anymore at all. So this year, more than any other year, please be aware of the trans people in your life. Because next year, we might not be.
