First impressions/review of Bubsy 4D. The controls seem loose and floaty, and part of this might be due to the animation. It's very easy to dive over the platform you're trying to land on, climb up the back side, and hop up and _back_ over the platform to fall off the other side. Bubsy has a jump, an aerial jump, a glide, and a pounce, all of which can be chained together to go shockingly far, but which all feel imprecise at medium range. The new hairball mode goes really fast, especially if you hold the boost button (RT by default). You can stop with LT, but I'm much more likely to just pull back on the stick. You're also expected to pop out of hairball mode sometimes as part of a chain of moves, and that muscle memory is taking a while to develop. They project your shadow straight down to help you gauge your distance, but that doesn't help when the camera starts to point upward (usually when you roll up a ramp). It's also pretty easy to lose track of your shadow entirely. The worlds are pretty vibrant and fun to explore, but it's really hard to tell what's a side path and what's forward through the level. Maybe that's intentional. The gameplay shines most, oddly enough, in the 2D areas. You don't have to fistfight the camera every 15 seconds, and there's a good distance on it so you can mostly see what's coming. And when you don't have to deal with foreshortening, gauging distance and making jumps is downright fun. Speaking of fun, the writing and voice acting are great, especially Sean Chiplock as Bubsy. The writing is pretty sharp and self-aware, without pandering to the audience. Bubsy acknowledges his past adventures and is mostly just trying to live them down. He even says multiple times that he hates platforming. The voice acting is, again, fantastic, but underutilized. The cutscenes are great, but most of the dialogue is done through text — a real missed opportunity. Overall, 14/20. Bubsy isn't back; he just arrived.
