Is lacquer safe to spray with just an N95 mask? The workers at the Gibson plant in Nashville seem to just be wearing that. While the workers at Epiphone in China are wearing full respirators?

I would do like the Chinese and wear a respirator specifically with organic vapor cartridges, unless the SDS sheets called for something different. It might be fine, but lots of things seemed safe until people started getting sick.
I would think it depends on what he's standing in front of. If that's a giant fume extraction system venting out the building then I would say it may not matter as much?
