it is my morbid interest to look at tiny 'devlog' channels on youtube. All of these people are primarily programmers with zero connections to any local indie game scenes but obsessively follow success advice of a handful of the same game dev gurus. Its like a parallel reality, quite fascinating.

Haha this sounds pretty fascinating. What's their approach generally like, or what are the big differences you see? Is it mainly like, a particular commercial focus, or there some odd hustle culture-y tenets they adhere to, that sort of thing?

credit to this particular guy he is not the worst, his video is almost all dedicated to the fictional cosmology he invented to guide the game design of his souls-like, so thats way more typical indie guy

Like a lot of stuff like this, there are plenty of grains of truth to keep the followers in, like they're not wrong about wishlists and steam stats and stuff like that. Its just interesting that on average people seem to be really incurious and uninterested in games at all.

Right now the 'meta' of game dev successwin youtube is to make so-called 'incremental games' after some of the most prolific youtubers found massive success there, so watch out for a lot more of those kinds of games i guess.
