That’s particularly true because two of the biggest proposed culprits in insect declines—deforestation and agricultural pesticide use—were on the rise well before 2012, he says. Digging further back in time, potentially by repurposing older weather radar data, will be key to studying long-term, large-scale trends, Wepprich says. “Then you could start getting into those questions.”
